There is a new play at the Steppenwolf Theatre titled "Penelope" where four Speedo-clad men are locked in a do-or-die competition to win Penelope’s love, but reach a grisly fate... she needs no man!

Just this month, I decided to reinvent MY 'Penelope' from 2004. I recently had a break up. It's a long story... stemming from my personal reasons and differences of never being married, expressing the 'no need' for a man in my life. Turning away a beautiful love.

She was beautifully rephotographed by Doug Birkenheuer - tag line of 'the epic non-traditional woman.' My story is based off of 'Penelope Reknown' by Marilyn Katz... she is not under any man's control; survives on her own, patiently waiting for her husband to return from the war, while many suitors approach her, she continues to stand her ground.

I just picked up my work from LaLa Gallery in Lafayette, IN - left at 7:30am - wrapped, packed, stuffed the van, went to lunch, drove back to Chicago to the Beverly Arts Center, unstuffed the van, unpacked, unwrapped entire 'Reflection' show plus 5 added pieces! home by 5pm

Solo Show 'Reflection' opening reception was incredible. Coinciding with a gallery walk in Lafayette, IN 300-400 people attended... see link below of over 100 pictures.

My boyfriend Jonathan Weiss suggested I wear my Ralph Lauren dress and heels, expressing that the outfit complimented my work. The evening started out beautifully. Ira - a woman who visited the gallery last weekend was there promptly at 6pm looking lovely and once again told me about her 'goose bumps' while viewing my work. The flow of people was non-stop, in which some had to tell me which 'girl' was their favorite, how much my work moved them, questions re: my technique, process, color choices, etc. 'Loss of a Friend' and Simone were two mentioned quite often.

Opening Reception of Collective Conversations in Clay: Merging Media

The opening reception of Collective Conversations in Clay: Merging Media was really beautiful. People of all walks of life attended, a steady flow most of the evening.

There is still a chance to see the show and I highly recommend it. The collaborations are incredibly unique. Joanna Kramer (clay) and her husband Andrew Kerr (concrete/construction) created a wall installation that screams clever. Kramer's wood fired pillow vases also sit on concrete tables designed by Kerr that I want in my home. Cathi Bouzide (clay) and Danny Mansmith (textiles) created a mold of a silo wrapped in fabric and repeated over and over again as an installation. The colors and textures are amazing. Shane Grimes (clay) and Anni Betts (illustration) sold one of their wall pieces. Her scrolly, intricate patterns are hand drawn and fired on Grimes' large gorgeous, soda-fired platters and silos. Gina Hutchings (clay) and Tom Lucas (printmaking) continue Hutching's signature geisha women giving them a new dimension. Gina also sold her solo piece opening night. Emily Murphy (clay) and Sarah Chapman's piece is an oblong soda fired piece that is wrapped in metal and sits on a stand. Chapman's side has gems and stones embedded in little pods - such talent.

My collaboration "Daphne Adorned" ~ Nancy Pirri (clay) with Veronica Riley Martens (jewelry design) caused people to stare, walk around, read her story and inspired interesting conversations. I loved watching this. She stands with a very curvy piece of birchwood behind her with chains falling from the branches with Tagua/Babacu nuts placed in random sections. Collective Conversations in Clay: Merging Media

In this third annual exhibition, ten ceramic artists collaborate with an artist of a different medium including printmaking, film, tattoo artistry, textiles, metalsmithing, garment design, painting, graphic arts, jewelry design, crafts and concrete design. Twenty-one artists in total will present both their own individual and collaborative works. These unique collaborative artworks exhibit a creative alliance between artists while still providing the classic individuality of each artist’s own design and vision.

Empty Bowls Project in Chicago

The Empty Bowls Project in Chicago takes place Friday, December 12th.

Please spread the word to any artists you know that would be willing to donate a ceramic bowl. You can contact Joanna Kramer if you have any questions. Her information is also below including ‘drop off’ location.

Empty Bowls is a nationwide effort by artists/potters to help fight hunger. Lillstreet Art Center is proud to host the 3rd annual Empty Bowls Project to benefit Chicago-area hunger-fighting organizations. We're asking student and professional potters to donate bowls for this cause.

Empty Bowls works like this: guests choose a bowl and are served a generous serving of soup and bread made by First Slice Cafe, in exchange for a $20 suggested donation. Guests keep the bowl as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. Bowls with an estimated price of over $30 will be placed up for auction.

Empty Bowls will take place on Friday, December 12, 2008, 5-8 pm in the Lillstreet Gallery.

100% of the money raised will be given to First Slice (www.firstslice.org), so they may continue to create healthy meals for these local organizations whose mission includes helping those who are hungry and/or homeless: Heartland Alliance, The Night Ministry, American Indian Center Youth Program, Howard Area Alternative High School, Broadway Youth Center, Center on Halstead, and Chicago-area soup kitchens.

With the revenue generated from last year’s EMPTY BOWLS event, First Slice was able to donate 1000 meals to youth in need.

Corinne D. Peterson ~ Krasl Art Center Biennial Sculpture Invitational

Chicago sculptor and clay artist Corinne D. Peterson is one of 26 sculptors from throughout the country chosen to display work at the Krasl Art Center’s Biennial Sculpture Invitational in St. Joseph, Michigan, from July 24, 2008 through September 7, 2009.

The theme of the 13-month long, outdoor show is the environment and how the art and the artist address the issue. Corinne Peterson’s Deep Earth Markers I, II, III reflect on the ecological crossroads where our world now finds itself. The surface carving alludes to the eons of geologic activity and layers of human influence that have contributed to the current environmental crisis. The three stoneware markers are 5'10", 6'3" and 6'9" tall.

In addition to Corinne Peterson, works by the following Chicago sculptors are included in the Krasl exhibition: Dean Langworthy, David R. Nelson, Mary K. O’Shaughnessy, Ted Sitting Crow Garner and Lucy Slivinski.

The Krasl Art Center is located at 707 Lake Boulevard, St. Joseph, Michigan. Corinne Peterson’s Markers and sculptures by 11 of the other artists are set in the St. Joseph Riverfront Park, north of the center between Lake St. and the river
